In life, the old adage goes that “timing is everything” but in the case of Israeli actress Gal Gadot, it would appear that her timing was wrong.
It was recently reported that a viral video that the actress did along with some her Hollywood contemporaries did not sit well with audiences and was criticized for being tone deaf.
For her part, the “Wonder Woman” actress said that the video of her and the others singing the 1971 John Lennon song “Imagine” at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic was “in poor taste.”
The others who participated in the video included Jamie Dornan, Kristen Wiig, Natalie Portman, Amy Adams, Mark Ruffalo, Chris O’Dowd, singer Sia, model Cara Delevingne and Will Ferrell.
In an interview for the February issue of “InStyle” Gadot said that the video had “all pure intentions,” but she acknowledged that “sometimes you don’t hit the bullseye”.
According to a CNN report, Gadot organized the video in March 2020 — just as countries across the globe entered lockdown for the first time — and posted it on Instagram with the caption: “We are in this together, we will get through it together.” It has been viewed more than 10 million times since it was published.
Gadot said that, with hindsight, the video was “premature”. She also said that “I felt like I wanted to take the air out of it, so that was a delightful opportunity to do that.”
Belfast star Dornan defended Gadot against the critics, saying she was “trying to do a good thing”.
Gadot also told InStyle that she now finds the controversy “funny” and said that, as the pandemic had hit Europe and Israel before it came to the US, she was “seeing where everything was headed.”
CNN reported that in the InStyle interview, Gadot also spoke about the upcoming Cleopatra biopic in which she’s set to star, she said that the film will “celebrate” the story of the Egyptian queen and won’t just show “how sexy and appealing she was, but how strategic and smart, and how much impact she had and still has on the world we’re living in today.”
In February, another film starring Gadot will hit the theaters. The Israeli born actress will play a leading role in Kenneth Branagh’s version of “Death on the Nile.” Due to the pandemic this film saw multiple delays in its release date.
