(Newsmax) About three in five Americans say former President Donald Trump should stand trial before the 2024 GOP primaries or ahead of the general election, according to a new Politico Magazine/Ipsos poll.

Here are how the poll results, released on Friday, break down:

  • 59% said Trump’s federal trial on the election case should be held before the 2024 GOP primaries, while 19% say they disagreed, and 22% said they did not know.
  • 61% of all Americans say Trump’s federal election trial should be held before the general election, compared to 19% who disagreed, and 19% who said they did not know.
  • 33% of Republicans said Trump should be tried on the federal election case before the November vote, while 45% said they disagreed, and 21% did not know.
  • 89% of Democrats said he should stand trial on the federal elections case before the general vote, compared to 3% who said he should not, and 8% who said they did not know.
  • 63% of independents said Trump should stand trial before the general election, while 14% said he should not, and 22% were uncertain.
  • 51% said they believe Trump is guilty of the alleged crimes in the federal 2020 elections case, compared to 26% who said he is not.
  • 59% said they believe Hunter Biden is guilty of the alleged crimes in the tax non-payment case.
  • The poll, conducted Aug. 18-21, surveyed 1,032 U.S. residents. The margin of error is plus or minus 5.8%.
