Richard Moore, the head of MI6 said this week that Iran is not interesting in a new nuclear deal but the Biden administration and EU leaders are intent on continuing talks.
The head of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service said during a talk at the Aspen Security Forum that “the deal is absolutely on the table,” the Jewish Chronicle reported.
“And the European powers and the [Biden] administration here are very clear on that. And I don’t think that the Chinese and Russians, on this issue, would block it. But I don’t think the Iranians want it.”
“I’m not convinced we’re going to get there… I don’t think the Supreme Leader of Iran wants to cut a deal,” he added.
Talks to re-establish the nuclear deal have been going on for months, but have stalled, with Iran repeatedly insisting on further concessions, some having little or nothing to do with negotiations.
Also speaking about the Iran threat at the conference was Defense Minister Benny Gantz.
Gantz said that Israel had the ability to respond militarily if necessary to prevent Iran from attaining a nuclear weapon.
“Should we be able to conduct military operations to prevent it, if needed? The answer is yes,” he said. “Are we building the ability? Yes. Should we use it as a last [resort]? Yes. And I hope that we will get United States support.”
