Amazon (AMZN.O) announced on Wednesday that it will exclusively stream 21 regular-season New York Yankees games on its Prime Video platform during the 2025 season. The move comes as streaming companies ramp up their efforts to secure live sports rights in an increasingly competitive market, Reuters reported.

Prime Video subscribers residing in New York State, Connecticut, northern and central New Jersey, and northeast Pennsylvania will have access to the games at no additional cost. These regions encompass a significant portion of the Yankees’ fanbase.

For decades, live sports have been a staple of cable television, but with more viewers shifting to digital platforms, streaming services are investing heavily in securing sports content. Reuters noted that Netflix (NFLX.O) has been expanding its live sports offerings, securing events such as the high-profile Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul boxing match. Additionally, the streaming giant has committed over $5 billion to exclusively broadcast WWE’s Raw in multiple territories and is reportedly eyeing the U.S. television rights for Formula 1.

Amazon’s Prime Video, along with other digital competitors, has been growing its live sports portfolio to attract new subscribers and boost advertising revenue, given that live events typically draw large, engaged audiences. The platform already offers coverage of NBA games, Thursday Night Football, NASCAR, the Seattle Kraken, and Overtime Elite, among other sports.

With the demand for live sports on streaming services surging, Amazon’s latest deal highlights the evolving landscape of sports broadcasting, as traditional cable faces increasing pressure from digital alternatives, according to Reuters.
