Biographer suggests Obama’s presidency was even more historic than previously known

What happened: In an interview with Tablet magazine, Barack Obama biographer David Garrow discussed a letter the former president wrote to a college girlfriend in which he “repeatedly fantasizes about making love to men.”
Crucial context: Newsweek magazine hailed Obama as “the first gay president” on the cover of its May 2012 issue.
• Obama was frequently criticized for surrounding himself with male aides at the White House.
• The New York Times reported in 2009 on the “nagging concern” within the Obama administration that the president and his closest advisers “form a boys’ club and that he is too frequently in the company of only men not just when playing sports, but also when making big decisions.”
What it means: Obama will go down in history as America’s first mixed-race president. Garrow’s comments suggest his presidency may have been even more historic than previously known.
