Israel: Paramedics treat nearly 3,000 people during Yom Kippur

(JNS) Paramedics treated 2,842 individuals across Israel during Yom Kippur, Israel’s national emergency service Magen David Adom reported on Saturday night. Nearly 2,000 people were evacuated to hospital.

Three people were injured lightly by a Hezbollah rocket that exploded in the Western Galilee. A dozen more were hurt while running to shelters as rocket-alert sirens sounded, according to MDA.

At least 286 individuals fainted, dehydrated, or fell ill due to the fast. More than 250 people were injured while riding bikes, scooters, skateboards or rollerblades, including six in moderate condition and 255 in light condition.

Around 40 people were wounded in violent incidents, among them a 41-year-old man who was evacuated to hospital in critical condition, where he was later declared dead.

Car accidents also claimed victims, according to the ambulance service, with 42 persons injured, including 11 in moderate and 31 in light condition.

According to MDA 146 women were taken to hospitals to give birth, with one woman delivering in the ambulance en route to the hospital.

International and U.S. leaders and officials released statements on Friday ahead of Yom Kippur, the most solemn day on the Jewish calendar.

“Sending our very best wishes to British Jews and Jewish communities around the world observing Yom Kippur,” stated the office of U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, adding “Gmar chatimah tovah.” (The expression refers to being “sealed” in the proverbial “Book of Life.”)

“Tonight, Jewish communities will come together to mark the beginning of Yom Kippur. More than a year after Oct. 7, and in the face of emboldened antisemitism at home, I know this time is a difficult time,” said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “As you come together during this painful period for the Jewish people, I hope you feel hope and community. Gmar chatimah tovah.”

U.S. President Joe Biden also shared a Yom Kippur message, and Vice President Kamala Harris held a High Holidays campaign call pitching Jewish voters.

“The blessing of Yom Kippur is that it is not just a day of reflection, repentance and reverence—but a day of transformation, forgiveness and hope,” Biden stated. “On behalf of my family and my entire administration, we wish you a meaningful and easy fast. Gmar chatimah tovah.”
