(NEWSMAX) The man who allegedly fatally stabbed a Ukrainian refugee on a Charlotte, North Carolina, train can be heard saying “I got that white girl” while other passengers sat and stood by.

It has been reported that Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old who fled Ukraine in 2022, was fatally stabbed on Aug. 22. Authorities have charged career criminal Decarlos Brown Jr. in connection with her death.

The killing gained national attention during the weekend after authorities released surveillance video of the incident.

“I didn’t notice until now that the man accused of stabbing and killing the Ukrainian young woman in Charlotte, N.C. said on camera, ‘I got that white girl, got that white girl’ while walking around with her blood dripping from his knife. Nobody reacts on the train, reflecting how Americans are used to urban ultraviolence,” journalist Andy Ngo posted on X with the surveillance video showing the murder.

The video showed other passengers seemingly acting as though nothing unusual happened on the train while the suspect walked around the car after the murder.

Brown, a homeless man, had been arrested and released 14 previous times. His criminal history, dating back to 2014, includes armed robbery with a dangerous weapon, for which he spent eight years in jail.

A Democrat judge released Brown back on the streets following his most recent arrest in January.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., told Newsmax on Tuesday morning that she has introduced a bill that would restrict federal funding to sanctuary cities and states that do not enforce cash bail.

“Letting these people, these repeat violent offenders out of jail to go back on the street and to commit crime … many times they are back on the street before the paperwork is finished by the arresting officer,” Blackburn said while appearing on “Wake Up America.”
