Axios dropped a startling report Monday revealing that multiple House Democrats say they’re hearing increasingly extreme demands from their own supporters — including calls to get arrested, risk violence, and even storm the White House — in a desperate attempt to stop Donald Trump.
Facing a political landscape dominated by Republicans — with Trump in the White House, a GOP-controlled Congress, and a right-leaning Supreme Court — frustrated Democratic voters are reportedly urging their representatives to take drastic measures.
“Some of them have suggested … what we really need to do is be willing to get shot,” one House Democrat told Axios, referring to protests at ICE facilities or federal agencies.
Another Democrat described a growing sentiment among the base: “There needs to be blood to grab the attention of the press and the public.” A third lawmaker said their constituents are urging them to abandon civility, saying it’s no longer working and that it’s time to “prepare for violence … to fight to protect our democracy.”
One member recounted being bombarded with messages online: “People have sent me crazy s*** … told me to storm the White House and stuff like that,” although they added that extreme online comments are nothing new.
Perhaps most jarring, the lawmakers said these messages often come not from fringe radicals, but from educated, affluent white progressives in urban and suburban areas.
“A lot of times that’s coming from economically very secure white people,” said one Democrat. “They’re demanding that we allow ourselves to be victims of violence or get arrested — not realizing the risk that poses to people of color, women, LGBTQ members of Congress. We wouldn’t fare well in prison.”
Axios notes that the Democratic base’s escalating rhetoric reflects a deeper question: after years of legal, political, and cultural efforts to stop Trump — all of which have failed — will resistance remain peaceful, or is the party on the edge of something more dangerous?
